About
Our Dental Practice
Ashbury Dental Care is a friendly and
caring private dental practice in Budleigh Salterton, East Devon. It
is situated in a spectacular position overlooking the Otter Estuary
on the edge of Budleigh Salterton.
The
practice was created
from a vision of a dental practice: Where high clinical standards
were accompanied by outstanding levels of customer service, and a
relaxing environment, to quite literally create a 'Service to make
you smile'. This vision was the result of one mans dedication to
dental care and his patients; Dr Maurice Sims.
The first
stage in bringing this vision to life came with some initial
sketches and a long list of requirements from Maurice, to transform
a 100 year old building into a modern state of the art dental
practice. With his hands on approach, came the initial designs for
the practice, which went through several revisions before submission
of the final design which was unanimously approved. Work then
began in late 2007 with the demolition of the old outbuildings and
clearance of the site, in preparation for the construction this new
dental practice for Budleigh Salterton
After around
5 months of construction, building was nearing completion and the
shape of the dental practice could now be seen, with
decoration in progress the task of installing the interior and new
equipment could now begin.
Our
practice here in Budleigh Salterton was officially opened on 15th
August 2009 by the world renowned broadcaster and journalist Sue
Lawley who joined Maurice, the team and guests for the opening
party, where 'Sue spoke
of her experiences at the dentist - in particular as a patient of Dr
Sims' Since then the practice has
grown rapidly and continues to grow largely through recommendation.
For many a
visit to the dentist is not something which they look forward to;
with memories of childhood dentistry still firm in many peoples
minds. Thankfully times have changed and continue to change with
advances in technology, equipment and materials. At Ashbury Dental
Care you can be assured of a
friendly and warm welcome
where we take time to get to know you, discuss your needs and to
provide gentle dental care tailored your needs.
The practice is easily accessible from
both Sidmouth and Exmouth directions along the East Budleigh Road
(B3178), with adequate on site parking as well as a bus stop
directly outside the practice. Click Here to

Dr
Maurice Sims leads the team at Ashbury Dental Care graduated from
the University of Wales in 2000 with a 1st Class BSc. (Hons) Degree
in Dental Technology. After winning several awards for his practical
work during his time at Cardiff he carried on to complete his BDS at
the University of Birmingham; a place itself steeped in Sims family
history.
Dentistry has been in
the Sims family since 1836 when Robert Sims was one of only three
dentists practicing dentistry as a profession in the UK. His son,
Professor Charles Sims was one of the founders of Birmingham Dental
Hospital and was a key instigator in creating the dental profession
we know today, through his involvement in passing the Dental Reform
Act of 1878. This made dentistry a regulated profession and changed
it for the better, from what was up until then practiced by many as
a barber shop art.
Maurice had been
visiting East Devon since a child and came to know the area well.
When in 2005 an opportunity arose to work as an NHS dentist in the
region, he jumped at the chance to work and live in an area of
outstanding natural beauty. Sadly things have moved on in the
NHS and with the advent of the new dental contract, obtaining NHS
funding has become more difficult.
Since moving to the
region in 2005 Maurice has worked in two award winning practices;
Wendy Sandeman Dental Practice in Dorset and The Crescent Specialist
Dental Centre in Plymouth. Maurice was also one of
the only dentists in the region to be invited to join the
development team at the new Peninsula Dental School, where he worked
on a consultancy basis; bringing with him a fresh young approach to
creating the new dental school. In this role he combined both his
technical expertise and clinical skills to help bring to life a
vision for a new dental school to serve the communities of the South
West in Devon & Cornwall.
Although
retaining close links with both practices in Devon and Dorset,
Maurice now works full time, leading the team at his rapidly
growing practice in Budleigh Salterton.
In the little time between
working with patients and running a new dental practice,
Maurice enjoys living on
the coast, spending time with friends and family as well as his
hobbies which include; photography, water-skiing, sailing and
walking.
