Ashbury
Dental Care
The plans for a
new dental surgery in Budleigh Salterton have been created from a
vision: Where high clinical standards are accompanied by outstanding
levels of customer service, to quite literally create a 'Service to
make you smile'.
This vision
is a result of one mans' goal to create a friendly and relaxing
environment where staff love coming to work and patients feel
relaxed & valued as people. Dental care today is more than just teeth and is vitally important
not only to maintain oral health, but as increasing research is
showing; to also maintain a healthy body.
Whatever your previous experience of dental care you can be assured
of a friendly and caring welcome from the team at Ashbury Dental
Care.
Dr Maurice
Sims graduated from the University of Wales in 2000 with a 1st Class
BSc. (Hons) Degree in Dental Technology. After winning several
awards for his practical work during his time at Cardiff he carried
on to complete his BDS at the University of Birmingham; a place
itself steeped in Sims family history.
Dentistry has
been in the Sims family since 1836 when Robert Sims was one of only
three dentists practicing dentistry as a profession in the UK. His
son, Professor Charles Sims was one of the founders of Birmingham
Dental Hospital and was a key instigator in creating the dental
profession we know today, through his involvement in passing the
Dental Reform Act of 1878. This made dentistry a regulated
profession and changed it for the better, from what was up until
then practiced by many as a barber shop art.
Maurice had
been visiting East Devon since a child and came to know the area
well. When in 2005 an opportunity arose to work as an NHS dentist in the
region, he jumped at the chance to work and live in an area of
outstanding natural beauty. Sadly things have moved on in the
NHS and with the advent of the new dental contract, obtaining NHS
funding has become more difficult.
Since moving
to the region in 2005 Maurice has worked in two award winning
practices; Wendy Sandeman Dental Practice in Dorset and The Crescent
Specialist Dental Centre in Plymouth. Maurice was also one of
the only dentists in the region to be invited to join the
development team at the new Peninsula Dental School, where he worked
on a consultancy basis; bringing with him a fresh young approach to
creating the new dental school. In this role he combined both his
technical expertise and clinical skills to help bring to life a
vision for a new dental school to serve the communities of the South
West in Devon & Cornwall.
Although
retaining close links with both practices in Devon and Dorset,
Maurice now works full time, leading the team at his rapidly
growing practice in Budleigh Salterton.
In the little time between
working with patients and running a new dental practice,
Maurice enjoys living on
the coast, spending time with friends and family as well as his
hobbies which include; photography, water-skiing, sailing and
walking.
