Dr Maurice Sims BDS (U.Bham), BSc (Hons) (U.Wales)
Dental Surgeon & Dental Technician
GDC Reg No. 85555
Dr Maurice Sims is a dentist based in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, in between Sidmouth and Exmouth. He has a dual qualification as both a Dental Technician and Dental Surgeon and today leads a multi-disciplinary team at Ashbury Dental Care.
Training as a Dental Technician BSc (Hons) (U.Wales)
Maurice initially qualified after three years of full time study as a dental technician in 2000, with a First Class BSc. Honours Degree from The University of Wales. Here he gained an in depth knowledge both theoretically and practically into the technical aspects of dental materials, crown & bridge work, veneers, dentures, orthodontics, dental implants and oro-facial anatomy.
Training as a Dental Surgeon BDS (U.Bham)
Although being offered a place to continue to study dental surgery at Cardiff, the offer of a place to study at The University of Birmingham & Birmingham Dental School, drew him back to the family roots and after a further five years of full time study he qualified in 2005 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.
With his practical experience as a dental technician and academic knowledge from his first degree, he was invited by Birmingham Dental Hospital to lecture to postgraduate dentists both there and at dental postgraduate centers across the country. This meant that whilst training himself as a dentist, he was able to pass on and share his knowledge and practical skills as a dental technician. Today he continues to pass on his knowledge and expertise through the training of dental nurses and mentoring dental students.
Visions & Experience
Since qualification he has worked in a broad cross section of NHS, private and specialist practices, before designing, planning and building his own practice from a vision focused on a team approach and a relaxed and friendly environment. Today this vision has been realised with a dental practice regarded by many as leading the way in dental care.
Whilst setting up his own practice he was invited to join the team at Peninsula Dental School in a consultancy role, where he worked with the Dean, architects and project management team to bring both his dental and technical knowledge to develop the vision for Peninsula Dental School to where it is today.
Young Dentist Of The Year
In 2007, Maurice was a finalist in the national Dentistry Awards for the prestigious title of young dentist of the year and attended the glittering awards ceremony in Leicester where he was narrowly beaten by stiff competition to come a close runner up.
A Little History
Dentistry has been in the Sims family since the 1800’s when dentistry as a profession was still in its infancy and well before the Dentists Act was passed in 1878 making it a profession with statutory registration. At this time Robert Sims was one of only three dentists practicing professionally in the central counties, better known now as The Midlands.
His son Professor Charles Sims was one of the founders of Birmingham Dental Hospital and was instrumental in helping to pass the dental reform act and create the profession we know today. Whilst family records show one of his sons as qualifying as a dentist, no records can be found as to him practicing dentistry.
Dentistry skipped a few generations and it was not until Maurice qualified, that dentistry once again came back into the Sims family. Thankfully dentistry has come a long way since these early days and today at Ashbury Dental Care he leads the team focusing on utilising the latest in technology and materials to provide dental care fit for the 21st century.
Maurice has recently become a Dad to twin girls and spends his time outside of the practice with his family, going for walks and enjoying the local beaches.
